The embroidered polo is the most popular piece of workwear in Britain for a reason. It looks smart enough for customers, it is comfortable enough for a full shift, and a stitched logo lasts as long as the shirt does. Getting one right comes down to three choices: the polo, the logo size and the placement.

Step 1: choose the right polo

Polo type Best for Embroidery?
Cotton pique Office, retail, reception and client-facing teams Ideal. Classic look, holds stitching perfectly.
Polycotton blend Trades, warehouses and daily wear Ideal. Tougher, keeps colour longer, less shrinkage.
Heavyweight polo Site work and teams who are hard on their kit Ideal. Carries a dense logo without puckering.
Lightweight performance polyester Sports, gyms and hot environments Print recommended. Very light fabric can pucker under stitching.
High temperature wash polo Care and healthcare teams washing at 60°C Ideal. Choose polyester or polyester-rich blends.

Step 2: get the logo size right

On a left chest, most logos look best at around 6 to 9cm wide. Go much smaller and fine lettering fills in. Go much bigger and it starts to look like a fashion print rather than a uniform.

  • One size across the order. Keep the chest logo the same size on every polo, hoodie and jacket in your order. It looks consistent and means one embroidery file.
  • Simplify small detail. Straplines and tiny text rarely survive at chest size. We will tell you if yours needs adjusting.
  • Gradients and photos cannot be stitched. We will suggest a flat-colour version or a printed alternative.

Step 3: pick the placement

  • Left chest: the standard. Over the heart, as the wearer stands.
  • Right chest: often used for a staff name, an accreditation or a second logo.
  • Sleeve: a smart spot for a website, sub-brand or flag.
  • Back: for larger logos on polos, print usually works better than embroidery.

How many polos per person?

Three. One on, one in the wash and one spare. Order one per person and it will be in the laundry half the week, and your team will fill the gap with their own clothes. If you are kitting out a whole team, our guide to embroidered workwear bundles covers what else to include.

Frequently asked questions

Is there a minimum order for embroidered polo shirts?

No. You can order a single embroidered polo. The price per shirt drops as the quantity rises.

How long do embroidered polos take?

Usually 7 to 10 working days from approval. A 5 working day express service is available for a small premium per garment.

Will the embroidery survive washing?

Yes. Embroidery is stitched thread rather than a coating, so it handles regular and hot washing far better than most prints.

Can you match my brand colours?

We match thread as closely as possible and show it on your mockup. Thread does not behave like ink, so an exact match is not always possible, but a close one nearly always is.

Can I add names to each polo?

Yes. Individual names can be embroidered per shirt, usually on the right chest.
